Red palm weevil research
Red palm weevil research. Researcher using a GPS system to plot the location of palm (family Arecaceae) trees infested with red palm weevils (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus). The red palm weevil is a major pest of palm plantations. The larvae can excavate metre-long holes in the trunks of palm trees, thereby weakening and eventually killing the host plant. This research is designed to find a way to treat palm weevil infestation by better understanding the insects. Photographed in the Palm Garden (Palmeral), Orihuela, Alicante, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain.
