High grade invasive ductal breast cancer, light micrograph
High grade invasive ductal breast cancer. Light micrograph of cells in a tissue sample from an invasive ductal breast cancer (malignant tumour). This specimen was assessed for the degree of tubule-duct formation (healthy tissue), and was given a score of 3 (low) on a scale of 1-3. The tissue forms a solid mass, instead of ducts being visible. This is a high score in terms of cancer, and this was classified as a high-grade cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Symptoms include painless lumps in the breast, a dark discharge from the nipple, and an indentation of the nipple. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. Once a cancer has spread, the prognosis is poor.
