k Summer heatwave, 2006 Summer heatwave, 2006. Global map showing the increased temperatures compared to previous years, during the heatwave in the northern hemisphere in the summer of 2006. The average land surface temperature from 1219th July 2006 was compared to the average temperature during the same period averaged over the previous six years 20002005. Red indicates hotter temperatures and blue indicates cooler temperatures. The extremes dark blue and dark red were ten degrees Celsius cooler and hotter. Areas with increased summer heat include the USA and northwestern Europe. Records for July temperatures were broken in Europe, and crop losses and high electricity demands were reported. Data obtained by the MODIS sensor on NASAs Terra satellite. Stock Photo - Afloimages

The average land surface temperature from 12-19th July 2006 was compared to the average temperature during the same period averaged over the previous six years (2000-2005). Red indicates hotter temperatures and blue indicates cooler temperatures. The extremes (dark blue and dark red) were ten degrees Celsius cooler and hotter. Areas with increased summer heat include the USA and north-western Europe. Records for July temperatures were broken in Europe, and crop losses and high electricity demands were reported.
