Lenticular clouds over Antartica
Lenticular clouds over Antartica. The lens-shaped cloud formations often occur in stacks. They are produced when moist air ascends over a mountain range and is heated adiabatically (that is, without any transference of heat energy) as it descends. Sometimes a standing wave develops in the flow on the lee side, and clouds form and remain in position as the air passes through them.
