Hurricane Katrina damage
Hurricane Katrina damage in Prentiss, Mississippi, USA. Prentiss is around 150 kilometres north of the Gulf of Mexico coast, but it is a poor area, and many buildings were destroyed and power lines were cut. Katrina was a category four hurricane when it hit the Gulf coast of the USA on 29th August 2005. It left a huge trail of damage, most notably in New Orleans. There, failure of the levee flood defences meant that around 80% of the low-lying port city was flooded. Many hundreds lost their lives. Katrina was thought to have been the most costly natural disaster in US history at the time.
