Greenland icebergs. View of compacted icebergs heading towards the open sea from the west of Greenland. The large iceberg at lower centre has a pool of blue meltwater on its surface. Meltwater is water formed by the melting of the iceberg's own ice. The ice shelves around Greenland extend the furthest in winter. The rising temperatures and strong winds of spring break up the ice, and cause large icebergs to float southwards. This is the Ilulissat icefjord.
