Iceberg splitting
Iceberg splitting, satellite image. Sequence of images taken over a period of a week showing iceberg A-38B splitting in two. On the 12th April 2004, when the first image was taken, the iceberg was 25 nautical miles long. After iceberg A-38 calved from the Ronne ice shelf in Antarctica 5 and a half years previous, it began to melt and break up, with A- 38B splitting off after a few weeks. A-38B then drifted 1500 miles north to waters around South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic. Photographed on 12th, 15th, 17th and 18th of April 2004 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Satellite (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites.
