Glacier
Glacier. Head (snout) of a glacier showing the layered ice that has formed the massive structure over many thousands of years. Snowfall on top of the glacier becomes compacted to form the next layer. The layers are older the lower down they are. The black layers near the bottom contain moraine material. This is rock debris that has been swept up and frozen into the glacier as it moves downhill under its own weight. A waterfall of meltwater is pouring off the glacier at upper left.
