Volcanic crater lake with sulphur deposits

Elemental sulphur is produced around volcanoes as hot sulphur- containing gases from volcanic vents condense and form deposits when they contact the cooler air. A sulphurous vent can be seen steaming behind the man at lower centre. Crater lakes such as this one are formed when a giant volcanic eruption leaves a crater which becomes filled with water. The water is typically hot, highly acidic and rich in sediment, which leads to its vivid colouration.
