Indonesian volcanoes
Indonesian volcanoes. Plume of ash (upper centre) rising from the volcano Gunung (Mount) Semeru, the highest mountain (3676 metres) in Indonesia. A younger volcano, Gunung Bromo, is seen steaming at centre left, its vapours drifting over the cone of the extinct volcano Gunung Batok (centre). Both Batok and Bromo, as well as the large caldera just behind them, lie within the Tengger Caldera. This caldera is a large 10-kilometre-wide, crater-like structure that is the remnant of a volcano that exploded, blowing off its top. The caldera floor is covered with a plain of ash, the Tengger Sand Sea. Photographed in 1999 in the Bromo-Tengger- Semeru National Park, Java, Indonesia.
