New volcanic island in Tonga, 4/10/2006
Home Reef, a new island in Tonga, thermal infrared satellite image. North is at top. The new island (lower left) formed in mid-2006 through the eruptions of the previously submarine volcano Home Reef. In this thermal infrared image, the hot new island is white, warm land on the nearby Late island is pink, water is blue and clouds are black. The temperatures range from 25 degrees Celsius (dark blue) to 65 degrees (white). The image was taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on the Terra Earth observation satellite on 4th October 2006. A combined infrared and visible light version of the image is E380/709.
