Volcanic solfatara formation
Volcanic solfatara formation. Crust of sulphur and gypsum (hydrous calcium sulphate) in a solfatara field. Solfatara is a phase of volcanic activity that takes place before the extinction of a volcano. Instead of violent eruptions, small vents emit sulphurous gases and steam. Photographed in Leirhnjukur, Iceland.
