Limestone pavement
Limestone pavement. Close-up of ferns growing amongst the clints (slabs) and grikes (fissures) of a limestone pavement. Limestone pavements are natural land-forms that resemble an artificial pavement. Limestone pavements are created when an advancing glacier scrapes away the earth covering limestone and retreats exposing the flat, bare, limestone surface. Limestone is slightly soluble in water, so water draining along joints and cracks in the limestone can produce slabs called clints and deep fissures called grikes (grykes), which can resemble man-made paving stones.
