[World War I John French (1902)
Lieutenant-General JDP French, Commanding Cavalry Division, South Africa Field Force, 1902. John Denton Pinkstone French (1852-1925) went on to be made a Field Marshal and was commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at the outbreak of the First World War but was relieved of his command in September 1915. He oversaw the suppression of the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 and was created Earl of Ypres in 1922. Portrait from "Celebrities of the Army", published by George Newnes, (London, 1902).
