Russian children at exhibition of woolly mammoth
Mammoth exhibition. Russian children in local dress stand in front of a mounted skeleton of a woolly mammoth Mammuthus primigenius. The specimen is from Yakutia in eastern Siberia, a region where a number of well-preserved mammoth remains have been found. Yakutia is one of the last refuges to which mammoths withdrew before their extinction some 10,000 years ago. In the background can be seen the giant upcurved tusks which curl around, each in an opposite spiral. The skull is still covered with skin. A glass case (at right) shows the hair these animals possessed. Many mammoths were preserved in permafrost. Photographed at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, Germany.
