Mammoth fossil site
Fossil mammoth site at Hot Springs in South Dakota, USA. This site holds the fossils of over 40 Columbian mammoths (Mammuthus columbi), with a few woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) skeletons as well. The mammoths are thought to be around 26,000 years old, and may have become trapped together in a large sinkhole. The Columbian mammoth stood over four metres tall at the shoulder and weighed up to ten tons. The woolly mammoth was slightly smaller, standing up to three and a half metres tall and weighing up to eight tons. These animals fed on vegetation, consuming over 300 kilograms each day. This site was discovered in 1974.
