Eroded badlands
Eroded badlands. Channels have been cut into this mudstone by water erosion. While rainfall is rare in this desert environment, when it does arrive it is intense. The water cannot penetrate the impermeable mudstone and so rushes over the rock's surface, removing loosened mud particles. This can rapidly deepen small channels called rills into these gullies. Photographed at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, California, USA.
