Salt lake, Mongolia. Salt residues cover the lake shore (white, left) where the water has evaporated. Due to the high salt concentration, most plants cannot grow in these areas. Only plants that have evolved techniques to eliminate excess salt from their system, known as halophytes, can survive. Photographed in Mongolia.
