Seif dune in Tenere Desert (Sahara), E. Niger
Seif dune in Tenere Desert (Sahara), East Niger. The major requirement for dune-building is a sand supply; in deserts this is transported by wind from areas of erosion. Seif (longitudinal-shaped) dunes tend to form in desert areas where the wind blows from two directions, with a gentle prevailing wind that supplies the sand and short- term cross winds, often of greater strength, that help to build up the dune, producing curved faces. In this photograph the ripple effect is caused by side winds blowing up the dune, with the dune face in the background. Chains of seif dunes can reach 100kms in length and heights of up to 210m have been recorded.
