Sahara Desert, satellite image. North is at top. The Sahara Desert covers 9 million square kilometres of land in North Africa. This part of the Sahara stretches from Morocco in the northwest to Libya in the northeast. From Chad in the southeast to Mauritania in the southwest. All of Tunisia and most of Algeria are also covered. The variation in colour is due to the different rocks and minerals that are present in the region. Away from the coasts the Sahara Desert is virtually uninhabited.
