Deforestation in Brazil, from space
Deforestation in Brazil. False-colour Landsat image of deforestation in Brazil. The colours have been chosen to highlight the destruction of the rain forest: the dark green of the natural forest contrasts the pale green and pinks of levelled forest. The linear, branching pattern to the loss of the forest is typical of the region. Loss of the rain forest in South America is one of the major environmental concerns. Its role as a carbon dioxide sink and moderator of climate is under threat, as is its position as home for thousands of unique species of animals, plants and insects.
