Cottonwood tree in a mixed pine and fir forest
Pine and fir forest. Autumnal cottonwood tree (Populus sp.) in a forest of mixed pine (Pinus sp.) and fir (Abies sp.) trees. The yellow colour of the cottonwood's leaves results from the loss of the green pigment chlorophyll in autumn which masks the other pigments during the rest of the year. Conifers like pine and fir do not shed all their leaves in autumn, but remain green all year round. Photographed in British Columbia, Canada.
