The reef is part of Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, which was established in 1981 to protect the marine ecosystem around Looe Key Reef. The coral reef system in the Florida Keys is known as the Florida Reef Tract, and is the largest living coral barrier reef system in North America, and the third largest in the world.
