Beijing and the Bohai Sea, satellite image. Beijing, the capital of China, is the grey patch at centre left. It is a city of around 15 million people. The Bohai Sea is an inlet of the Yellow Sea (bottom right). It is enclosed by the Liaodong Peninsula (centre right) and the Shandong Peninsula (lower right). Numerous rivers run into the sea from the area surrounding Beijing, making it polluted and heavily sedimented, which accounts for its sandy colour. This image was taken on 18th October 2003 by the MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite.
