Formerly known as Bangalore, this city's name officially changed back to its original name on 1 November 2006. It is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka, and in 2006 had a population of over 6 million, making it one of the largest cities in India. It is a centre for high-technology industries, and is known as the 'Silicon Valley' of India. The growth from its former size is seen in image E780/1427, a satellite image obtained in 1992. This image was obtained on 27 November 2000, by the Landsat 5 satellite.
