Chemical waste treatment
Chemical waste treatment using reed beds. Reed bed treatment systems are self-contained, artificially created wetland ecosystems. The mixture of aerobic and anaerobic soil conditions allow bacteria and fungi to flourish. These microbes can degrade, and render harmless, a wide range of organic chemicals and pollutants such as heavy metals. These beds are operated by ESU Services Limited for the ICI Billingham oil works, Cleveland, UK.
