Chachapoyas mummy research. Researchers cleaning a mummy from the Laguna de los Condores (Lake of the Condors), a burial site for the Chachapoyas people. Mummification is a process where tissues are preserved after death by extreme dessication in a dry climate. Parchment-like skin is seen covering the bones. The mummy was buried in the traditional foetal position. The Chachapoyas (The Warriors of the Clouds) were a pre-Hispanic people that lived in the Andean cloud forest region of Peru. Their culture is thought to have developed from 800 AD. They were conquered by the Incas in the 15th century. Photographed in the Leymebamba Museum, Peru, near the burial site.
