Computer graphic of a human DNA molecule
Human DNA. Computer graphic of part of a molecule of human Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). DNA determines a person's hereditary characteristics. The atoms are colour-coded: phosphorus is orange, oxygen is red, carbon is white & nitrogen is dark blue; hydrogen is light blue when it occurs singly, but green when two or more are attached to the same atom. DNA is comprised of 2 strands made of sugar- phosphate groups which wind around each other to form a helix shape. They are connected by nitrogen-containing nucleotides. The exact sequence of nucleotides determines the genetic code. Image of DNA from the central part of a human chromosome (centromere).
