Gene therapy research. Researchers in protective suits handling HIV virus samples inside a level 3 biosafety laboratory. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The virus has been genetically modified and has had its pathogenic gene removed. Eventually the virus will have the pathogenic gene replaced by a therapeutic human gene, in order to counteract a faulty gene in defective cells.
