Sample vial containing gel with DNA fragments
DNA sample. Gloved fingers selecting a semi-frozen sample vial. The vial holds a gel containing fragments of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), the molecule found in all cells which controls the hereditary characteristics of the organism. These fragments were first separated by applying an electric current across the gel. This is known as electrophoresis. Some fragments will move faster through the gel and become separated from the others over time. This allows the composition of the DNA to be analysed.
