Laboratory rat in sterile confinement
Laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus) in sterile confinement. This rat was born in a completely sterile environment and has never been exposed to external pathogens. Rats bred in sterile conditions are often used as controls in physiology or metabolism research, as they are not influenced by outside factors.
