F/colour TEM of thin section of human lymph node
False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a thin section of a human lymph node (lymph gland) showing numerous mitochondria (membranous bodies, oval or rounded in shape). Mitochondria occur in almost all mammalian cells, existing as the sites of synthesis of chemical energy for the cell's activities. This occurs through the manufacture of adenosine triphosphate (ATP); energy is released when ATP breaks down. Mitochondria are bounded by 2 membranes: an outer one, and an inner one, which is folded into finger-like cristae that project into the inner matrix. Original is BW print B465/003.
