Spices. Assortment of various spices which have culinary and medicinal qualities. The spices are (clockwise from upper left): black pepper (Piper nigrum) used to encourage saliva secretion; garlic cloves (Allium sativum) which is a digestive stimulant; nutmeg pods (Myristica fragrans) used to treat poor circulation, turmeric powder (Curcuma domestica) is a natural antibiotic; cardamon seeds (Elletaria cardamom) can be used to treat diarrhoea; coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum) can be used to treat diges- tive ailments and cinnamon sticks (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) when chewed alleviate heartburn. Also, seen here is red chilli powder (Capsicum sp.).
