Analysis of a religious painting
Analysis of a religious painting. Infrared reflectology analysis of part of a painting known as The Virgin of the Catholic Kings. The analysis has revealed traces of earlier stages of the painting. The original (see H160/163) has the baby Jesus's head facing the Madonna figure, but this version has the head facing away. There are also traces of the background showing through the Madonna's head, indicating that the background as a whole was painted, and then the Madonna added on top. The painting is by an unknown Castilian artist, and dates from the end of the 15th century. Photographed in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain.
