He headed the research that was conducted at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dolly was created by somatic cell nuclear transfer. The nucleus which contains genetic material was removed from a Scottish Blackface SB ewes egg cell and replaced with the nucleus of an udder cell from an adult Finn Dorset ewe. A spark of electricity then fused the udder cell nucleus with the egg cell cytoplasm. The genetically engineered egg was then implanted into the womb of a surrogate SB sheep.
