Computer graphic of a Herpes simplex virus
Computer graphic illustration of a Herpes simplex virus. This virus is spherical in shape with a protein capsid (coat, blue) composed of capsomere subunits in the form of hollow hexagonal or penta- gonal prisms. An envelope surrounds this coat, which here appears transparent with yellow sub- units (sometimes giving the envelope a fringe). In the core of the virus is DNA genetic material. H. simplex is one of the herpesviruses, and causes latent ulcer and painful blister infections in humans. Genital herpes is a sexually-transmitted disease; while H. simplex can also cause acute conjunctivitis of the eye and inflammations of the mouth. Mag: x170,000 at 6x4.5cm,x108,181 at 35cm.
