Herpes simplex I viruses. Coloured Transmision Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cell infected with Herpes simplex I viruses. The cell takes up much of the frame. Tiny spherical viruses (dark blue) fill the cell contents. Some viruses are emerging from the cell (lower right) to infect another cell. Herpes simplex type I virus causes oral cold sore infections, while type II virus causes genital herpes. It is one of the most common viral parasites in humans. It causes small fluid-filled blisters which, if touched, can spread the virus. In the mouth the blisters may persist for weeks. Antiviral drugs may be helpful. Magnification: x8,400 at 6x7cm size.
