LM of lung tissue containing coal particles
Anthracosis. Light micrograph showing lung tissue affected by coal miners' pneumoconiosis, known medically as anthracosis. Black coal particles are seen here, clustered into a dense aggregation at top right. Inhaled particles mainly affect coal miner's after prolonged exposure to fine coal dust; anthracosis occurs when the lungs capacity to remove coal particles is exceeded and the dust accumulates. Symptoms of anthracosis include shortness of breath, and complications may be the development of emphysema and an increased risk of lung cancer. There is yet no treatment for this disease.
