Slim disease in AIDS. Light micrograph of a Cryptosporidium sp. protozoan found in the diarrhoea of a patient with slim disease, a complication of AIDS. Slim disease causes an itchy rash, severe diarrhoea and wasting. It is caused by the presence of this or other parasitic protozoa in the intestines. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It causes a gradual weakening of the immune system, making otherwise harmless infections life-threatening. This patient lived in third world Africa. Lack of access to medicines and information has made AIDS a major public health issue in the third world.
