Liver cancer. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial (horizontal) section through the abdomen of a 42 year old woman. The front of the body is at top. Tumours can be seen (pale green) throughout the liver (brown, left), resulting from secondary liver cancer, metastasized (spread) from cancer of the breast. All malignant tumours have the capacity to metastasize. The commonest malignant growths found in the liver do in fact arise from cancers in other organs. Once a cancer has spread beyond its site of origin, the prognosis is poor.
