Cancer research
Cancer research. Comparing three petri dishes of cell cultures exposed to carcinogenic materials. The purple spots are areas where cells cultures have grown, but excessive growth is indicative of precancerous (neoplastic) cells. The control petri dish is at left, the most cancerous cells are at right. The test shows the relative carcinogenic power of materials. Photographed in the Health and Pollutants Laboratory of the INRS (the French National Institute of Research and Safety), Nancy, France. Tests are carried out here to establish the toxicity and cancer-causing properties of different materials, chemicals and pollutants.
