Spine tumour, MRI scan
Spine tumour. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the side view of a tumour (yellow) in the spine (backbone) of a female patient. The front of the body is at left. The tumour is located in the lumbar (lower) vertebrae, the blocks of bone that make up the spine and enclose the spinal cord. Spinal tumours are usually secondary cancers that have spread (metastasised) from elsewhere in the body. Prognosis is very poor for secondary cancers, with treatment aimed at preserving function and quality of life. Radiotherapy and steroid drug therapies are most commonly used.
