Infected spine, CT scan
Infected spine. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of the spine of a 33 year old with spondylodiscitis, the infection of an intervertebral disc. A frontal view is at left and a side view at right. The affected area is bright yellow, between the eighth and ninth vertebrae (block of bone). The disc is inflamed and may be exerting pressure on the spinal cord, which would cause great pain. Treatment is with antibiotics and rest.
