Miliary tuberculosis. Light micrograph of human lung tissue damaged by miliary tuberculosis. The blue and green areas (lower left and right) are infected lesions with a core of necrotic (dead) tissue. The white areas are alveoli (air sacs), some of which have coalesced to form cavities in the lung. Miliary tuberculosis is an acute form of tuberculosis in which the infective bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) enter the blood and spread to other parts of the lungs or to other organs, such as the liver, kidney and spleen. The disease is often fatal. Treatment involves a long course of several antibiotics. Magnification x20 at 6x9cm size.
