Ruptured Achilles tendon
Ruptured Achilles tendon. Leg of a 47-year-old male patient wearing a boot for a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles of the lower leg to the heel bone. It may rupture in an accident, and is often sustained during sporting injuries involving running or jumping. Symptoms are severe ankle pain, tenderness and bruising, and difficulty walking. Treatment is by immobilisation in a cast or boot such as this, followed by physiotherapy. In the extreme case of a severed Achilles tendon, surgery may be required to repair the damage.
