Depressed man with cigarette and alcohol
Drinking and smoking. Depressed man in a sombre mood smokes a cigarette and drinks a glass of alcohol. Both alcohol and tobacco are addictive substances. Alcohol acts as a depressant on the nervous system, and so reduces anxiety, tension and inhibitions. Tobacco contains nicotine which is a stimulant that reduces fatigue. The user may become dependent on both of these drugs, in which case withdrawal symptoms occur when smoking and drinking is suddenly stopped. Alcohol consumption may damage the heart, liver, and nervous system. Tar in tobacco causes lung cancer, while smoking is associated with heart disease.
