Cardiac patient
Cardiac patient. Doctors rolling a patient to insert a backboard. It is important to have a hard surface beneath the patient for effective cardiac resuscitation by heart massage and defibrillation. Heart massage (cardiac compression) is used to maintain a flow of blood around the body when a person's heart has stopped beating. A defibrillator delivers a controlled electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation (a rapid and chaotic beating of the many individual muscle fibres of the heart).
