View of a modern operating theatre
A modern operating theatre, a room designed to reduce the risk of infection in open surgical wounds. The room is equipped with shadowless lamps and a X-ray screen (centre left below the watch); the anaesthetic trolley is seen at centre in the background. A ventilation system provides a constant supply of clean and filtered air; the walls and the floors are easily washable and there are adjoining rooms with foot- and elbow-operated taps where surgeons and assistants scrub their hands and forearms before putting on their gowns, gloves and masks.
