Heart-lung machine
Heart-lung machine. This machine is designed to take over the functions of the heart-lung system during heart surgery. It will perform the primary functions of pumping the blood around the body and oxygenating it. It may also be used to deliver medications, to maintain adequate blood levels and to control blood temperature. The anticoagulant drug heparin is used to prevent clotting of the patient's blood in the machine. A perfusionist, a specialist technician, maintains the machine and operates it during heart surgery.
