Neurosurgeon uses microscope during brain surgery
Neurosurgeon. Seated at a high- powered microscope, a neurosurgeon operates on a patient's brain. In his left hand he uses an ultrasonic aspirator to remove tumour tissue. The female patient undergoing surgery is suffering from a low grade astrocytoma cancerous tumour, a type of glioma. The site of the tumour on the brain is seen on a video monitor (in the background). This type of astrocytoma is slow growing, but may spread widely throughout the brain. Surgery may be followed by both radio- therapy and chemotherapy. Photographed at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital, London.
